The World of James Herriot – The Best Thing to Do in North Yorkshire on a Rainy Day
The World of James Herriot is one of those places that feels genuinely made for a rainy day. The whole attraction is indoors, warm, and absorbing from the moment you step through the door. No cagoule required.
You’re walking into the actual home and surgery of Alf Wight, the real James Herriot, right in the heart of Thirsk. If you love the books, the original BBC series, or the newer All Creatures Great and Small on Channel 5 or PBS, being in the actual rooms where it all began is something else entirely. It’s hard to describe until you’ve done it.
The 1940s rooms are restored exactly as they were. The original dispensary is still there. There are two iconic Austin Seven cars, over 4,000 items of memorabilia, and recreated TV sets from both the BBC and Channel 5 adaptations. There’s an interactive children’s gallery for younger visitors, a peaceful garden with the Alf Wight memorial statue, and a well-stocked gift shop to browse on the way out.
Allow yourself a good couple of hours and wander at your own pace. There’s no rushing here. That’s rather the point.

While You’re in Thirsk
When you’re done with us, Thirsk itself is worth a wander. The market town centre is just two minutes from our door, with independent shops, cosy cafes, and proper Yorkshire pubs that know how to do a good lunch. On market days — Mondays and Saturdays — the square comes alive whatever the weather.
It’s the kind of town that gets under your skin. Most people who come for the museum end up coming back for the town as well.

We’re open seven days a week, all year round. Summer opening is 9:30am to 5:00pm, and winter hours are 10:00am to 4:00pm. Tickets are £10 for adults and £5 for children, with under 3s coming in completely free.
