Downton Abbey Filming Location in Thirsk, North Yorkshire

If you’re a fan of Downton Abbey, then a visit to Thirsk, North Yorkshire just became even more special. The World of James Herriot, the original home and surgery of Alf Wight, has a genuine connection to Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, the much-loved series’ cinematic conclusion.

A Room with a Famous Past

One of the rooms here at the World of James Herriot was used as a filming location for Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, serving as the home of the beloved Molesley, played by Kevin Doyle.

Filming took place June, 2024, and visitors today can stand in the very room that appeared on the big screen.

Thirsk’s Downton Connection

The museum isn’t the only Downton connection in Thirsk. The Grand Finale features scenes filmed at Thirsk Hall and along Kirkgate, the town’s beautiful historic street, marking the first time the real Thirsk appeared on screen as the Crawleys’ local town.
