James Herriot Foundation Trust award for the Askham Bryan College Outstanding Veterinary Nursing York Student 2019 presented at York Minster.

Ian Ashton, managing director of the World of James Herriot in Thirsk presented an award to Megan Sutton at the annual Askham Bryan College Graduation and Awards ceremony at York Minster.

Megan has studied at the College for a Foundation Degree in Veterinary Nursing and the James Herriot Foundation Trust Award is in recognition of her achievements in gaining the Special Award of Best Practical Veterinary Nursing Student.

Ian Ashton said: “I’m so pleased to have been able to present this award to Megan as it recognises her efforts and commitment to the care of animals which is why James Herriot joined the veterinary profession. The Award is one step in her career progress and hopefully this will support Megan in her future work and like the many others who have been inspired by the James Herriot books, TV series and films.”

The award was presented during the annual Graduation and Awards Ceremony held for the first time at York Minster where Megan also received the Handbook of Veterinary Nursing and other James Herriot memorabilia.

The James Herriot Foundation Trust is in memory of Alf Wight, OBE whose stories of life as a country vet in North Yorkshire helped to inspire thousands of people to become vets. The Trust Fund provides bursaries for people wishing to enter the animal care world and for whom the James Herriot stories have been an inspiration.

Ian Ashton added: “We are delighted to continue our relationship with Askham Bryan College and to recognise Megan’s achievements in the spirit of Alf Wight in whose memory we established the James Herriot Foundation Trust.”

The World of James Herriot management team has a vision to continually develop the attraction and has seen increases in visitors year on year since taking over in 2012.
