Thirsk – The Real Darrowby

Darrowby is a fictional village in the books and TV series “All Creatures Great and Small”. It is based on the real-life village of Thirsk, in North Yorkshire, England, with elements of Leyburn and Richmond.

The stories are inspired by the experiences of author James Herriot, who was a veterinarian in the Yorkshire Dales during the 1930s. The village of Thirsk and the surrounding countryside provide the setting for much of the series.

James Herriot’s original home and surgery is now a multi award-winning Visitor Attraction
